Welsh Willow Butter Knife
A beautiful butter knife carved by wood carver Felix Kary in Sheffield, UK.
Long time collaborator and favourite wood carver of Up There The Last by a country mile, Felix Kary has agreed to hand-carving a limited run of butter knives for the Shop, so we can all get a chance to enjoy his work!
A non-commercial spoon carver, Felix’s expertise comes from having carved over a thousand pieces to arrive at his beautiful trademark balance of playful angles and subtle ergonomic asymmetry.
Each item is carved with hand-made tools from selected pieces of green wood which are hand-felled, adding to the wholesome depth of these willow knives that cut through and spread your favourite butter.
The fat from butter naturally seasons the wood and they never require washing- just a wipe after use. Long may it serve you in its lifetime of buttery goodness, and perhaps one day make its way to a charity shop a hundred years from now, where you can still smell the butter from years of use- a real experience we have had, and one of the reasons why Felix’s knives are featured in the Shop.

THE ARTISAN
FELIX KARY
Having studied fine art in Cornwall, UK, Felix’s work has evolved to become rooted in nature, taking from the wild and creating from natural materials the tools with which we can live. It is so important to work with artisans like Felix as he shares the ethos at Up There The Last. Not only do we become the land through its eating, but to go a step further and make tools from our surroundings to help create this food makes it more delicious by slowing us down and enriches our lives by adding beauty and context to something as simple as spreading butter on your morning toast.
Felix is a non-commercial wood-carver, working as an educator in the North of England to share his connection in working the landscape with those diagnosed with autism.
